Born in Shanghai in 1947, raised in Taipei — Yang returned to Taiwan in 1981 after years of engineering studies in Florida and a quietly transformative encounter with Werner Herzog's cinema in Seattle. He never looked back.
A pioneer of the Taiwanese New Wave, Yang spent two decades giving Taipei its own cinematic language: deliberate pacing, fixed-camera long takes, interlocking lives observed at a respectful distance.
